Frequently asked questions

Polybrush don’t start (I press ‘try’ but nothing happens)

1. Use admin rights to run Polybrush first time
2. Try Portable version

What do the next? How to start trial and where to find Polybrush license key?

Click «Try» to use 90 day free trial. When it ends you should buy license key.
Follow the instructions here to pay and get key

Invalid license key (can’t register) / I updated Polybrush 1.x but my old key don’t working

Make sure that you run Polybrush as admin (see below). Try portable version.
If it doesn’t helps just send your info again using form at bottom of that page and wait another key at email.

Key for PC and laptop/Should I buy few Polybrush licenses to use it on few computers?

Yes, polybrush license keys are linked to computer hardware. You should buy as many licenses as many PC workstations you have.
But I understood that users often own 2 PC (main + laptop, like me) and I can generate 2 keys for one user (use contact form to tell me about second PC).
But for more licenses, you need to buy them.
There is a discount: $100 / workstation if you need 5 or more licenses.
So if you is a CG Studio or education college you can contact to buy many licenses in the same time.

Can license be transfered when hardware/PC crash?

Yes, license can be transfered when hardware-ID change.
I find old users in database by treir email and can make a new key. To do this, use form at website which was used when buying.
Of course, if it’s outdated one year license I don’t generate new key.
By the way, I think Polybrush 3.x will work without keys (using another payment method). But version 2 customers.x will not lose anything, they will get 3 licenses.

Can license be deactivated

No, license can’t be deactivated. I don’t have any access to your PC, etc. But I think Polybrush 3.x payment method will allow that (without access to users pc of course).

What will happen if Polybrush stop the business? Will we lost our licenses?

I’m not a company, but one person 🙂 I don’t think anything will happen to me, you always can contact me directly.
But sometimes I can respond slowly (I can be away from home for example). Because of it most likely I’ll change registration method in Polybrush 3.x to make key generation not dependent with me.

Will upgrades be discounted?

All updates are automatically and free!

Is there a student discount available

Now only for 5 and more licenses (see above)

What about other platforms?

Now only windows version available. In the future, possible Mac and Linux releases.
Android and other mobile versions is no in the plans.
Mac and other OS users are run it at virtual machine, to my knowledge.
Mac users run it at «parallels desktop», maybe Linux have something similar.

Polybrush vs Zbrush

Polybrush and Zbrush is a completely different programs. They have different workflow and purposes.
Zbrush is a software for sculpting and most convenient for creating characters. Polybrush is a more versatile tool, suitable for modeling many things. In general, it’s useful as an intermediate tool for concept design and kitbashing. With Polybrush you can quickly make basemesh and finish in other software, even in Zbrush. Or overpaint it in Photoshop for example.
Polybrush workflow is built around the idea of drawing in 3d using 2d canvas and has nothing to do with sculpting or classical methods of modeling.

Too low FPS, Polybrush works too slow. How to change render mode?

Maybe it’s a vertical sync problem, it often occurs on NVIDIA graphic cards.
Try diferrent settings (but default options in most cases is best: VSync 0, Sync_to_Blank — on):

Also better to disable vsync settings in graphics card driver settings (you can add special Polybrush preset for it):

Try buttons at vertical right panel to switch render mode to simple openGL (without shadows etc.).

Maybe Polybrush works slowly because of antivirus or windows defender. Try to disable it temporarily.
Also you can increase FPS a little by using classic windows shell theme. If FPS is still too low, look at «..Crash/Very low FPS» question below (Maybe turning off «Enable wintab» option helps)

Slow drawing with brushes, slow modifiers

Try to turn multithreading «off» or set to «auto»

Tablet pressure problems/Crash after click/Very low FPS/Slow drawing(Polybrush works slowly)

If you have Hunion tablet — see next question. So if previous answer don’t helps, see:
1.Always use last Polybrush version
2.Run Polybrush as administrator.
3.Try to use portable version.
4.Try to reinstall tablet drivers/reboot PC/restart Polybrush.
5.Try to change vsync settings (see vsync question above).
6.Try to delete MenuWnd.dll file in Polybrush folder.
7.Try to delete Wintab_*.dll files in Polybrush folder.
8.Try to enable «fix cursor» option and restart Polybrush, see next question for screenshot (pen pressure will be disabled).
9.Turn wintab off (see next questions) and use Polybrush without pen pressure.

Problems with tablet (HUION KAMVAS GT-156HD)

If you run Polybrush, the tablet stops working and does not respond to pen movement, as well as clicks on the screen, here’s what you need to do:
1. Remove the tablet driver
2. Download the latest from https://www.huiontablet.com/support/
3. Restart your PC
4. Install drivers
5. Download Polybrush Portable (.zip)
6. Run as admin and immediately close
7. Enter to tablet driver settings and turn off «Enable WinTab Liniar Optimization»
8. Click Apply (pic1)

9. Start Polybrush again as admin, press with stylus in viewport, try to draw in Polybrush.
10. Close Polybrush and turn «Enable WinTab Liniar Optimization» again (pic2)
11. Reload the PC and everything will be OK =) Dll libraries do not need to be deleted (wintab32.dll and MenuWnd.dll)

Problems with tablet work area/Crashes at start

Try to enable «fix cursor» option and restart Polybrush.

If it doesn’t helps, maybe scaling of monitor in your Windows OS is changed.
Please set “Change the size of text, apps, and others items” to 100% under my display settings.
In other case try to change tablet settings or try answers from previous question.
If even that doen’t helps, disable wintab and use Polybrush without pen pressure (see button at first picture). Pen pressure isn’t so often required in Polybrush.

Crash after start/after drawing start/does not draw (on old PC)

1.Use Portable version
2.May be too old openGL, check openGL status at bottom of viewport
3.Look to previous question

Polybrush crash while brush library loading/Polybrush crashes often

Try to set Polybrush use only one CPU core:

This option is keeping after Polybrush restart. So if you don’t have time to set it because of brush library autoloading you can remove all files in [Polybrush/brushes] folder to start Polybrush without brushes. After that you can disable brushes autoloading (see next question) and return all brushes files back.

Brushes are loading very slowly at every Polybrush start

You can disable brushes autoloading at PB start

Antivirus problems

This copy protection software, it encrypts the program code. So some antiviruses can take it as a virus, but most popular antiviruses don’t find the virus. Protector isn’t written by me, I bought software for protection. Therefore, I can’t change anything inside it.

Polybrush don’t gather any your information and don’t send it to web. Polybrush uses only information about tablet and hardware for licenses and online brush library. If antivirus don’t let run Polybrush or delete it, only solution is to add Polybrush the exceptions.

I tried to protect other programs, even utilities from windows\sistem32 at licence windows. After protection some antiviruses found viruses inside them. In any case you can add Polybrush to exceptions and see that antivirus willn’t notice any activity and infecting other files.

Polybrush UI Elements too small (or big) because I have very high (low) resolution display

Change settings/Ui size value and restart Polybrush.
If you want to reset all Polybrush settings, just delete «Polybrush\data\polybrush_settings.txt» file

Object is black (normals problem)

Apply «normals» modifier after if changing the «file settings» did not help

How to import/export objects, what format Polybrush is using

Polybrush using *.obj file format. All concepts and models, created in Polybrush and even Brushes stored in *.obj files supported by most 3D editors. Use buttons at top panel to save scene or object. You can change scale and axis swap settings at file panel on left side. Polybrush also automatically generates *.tga texture from vertex colors with same name as *obj file. It can be disabled in settings to save files faster.
Polybrush doesn’t using special format for scenes and brushes. It just saving all Polybrush settings (like modifiers) to *.obj comments. Other 3D software ignores that comments, that’s why you don’t need to use import/export. Simply use open/save to *.obj.
Watch tutorial to learn more.

Can Polybrush unwrap UVs?

Polybrush is a software for Modeling and Concept art, not for texturing.
It use automatically generated UV’s from vertex colors (You can paint vertex colors)
See previous question for more info.

Tesselation wire is always visible

Tesselation wire is hiding by F4 or «wire» button in viewport settings. But some people with Nvidia graphic card have that wire always visible.
If you one of them maybe you should change video driver settings.
From Nvidia drivers have to force antialising and toggle antialiasing for transparency on.
After that viewport renders beautifully without any additional triangles drawn on mesh.

Is any difference between Setup and Portable versions?

Polybrush Portable and Installer versions is the same, you can just unpack portable to any folder.
Only feature of installer version is shortcuts and uninstaller.

What are system requirements?

Polybrush have no special system requirements.
Only graphic tablet (with pen pressure sensitivity, like wacom etc.) is recommended because firstly it’s drawing software.
You also need a video card whitch supports at least OpenGL 3.0. But almost every modern video card suppurt it.
The complexity of the scene and nessessary RAM size depends on brushes. Use low-poly objects inside brushes to avoid overloading the scene.
Also Polybrush takes up very little space on the hard drive. Without brushes, it weighs about 4 MB, and about 40 MB with a fully loaded brush library.
